The Grid Modernization Initiative (GMI) works across the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to create the modern grid of the future. Our extensive, reliable power grid has fueled the nation’s growth since the early 1900s; however, the grid we have today does not have the attributes necessary to meet the demands of the 21st century and beyond.

The Bonneville Power Administration is a nonprofit federal power marketing administration based in the Pacific Northwest. Although BPA is part of the U.S. Department of Energy, it is self-funding and covers its costs by selling its products and services. BPA markets wholesale electrical power from 31 federal hydroelectric projects in the Northwest, one nonfederal nuclear plant and several small nonfederal power plants. The dams are operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Bureau of Reclamation. The nonfederal nuclear plant, Columbia Generating Station, is owned and operated by Energy Northwest, a joint operating agency of the state of Washington. BPA provides about 28 percent of the electric power used in the Northwest and its resources — primarily hydroelectric — make BPA power nearly carbon free

Grid modernization is BPA’s sole key strategic initiative. This work is essential for the agency to remain the region’s wholesale power provider of choice amidst the changing electric utility landscape. The grid modernization portfolio includes 35 projects designed to increase automation, improve accuracy and enhance visibility into how the federal power and transmission systems are functioning in real time, to ultimately enhance the optimization and reliability of the grid. These projects will enable BPA to leverage new technologies to improve workplace efficiencies and keep pace with the evolving Western electricity market, allowing us and the region to seek new opportunities for marketing power and transmission products and services well into the future.

Through a portfolio framework called Identify, Define, Integrate and Deliver (IDID), project teams are required to identify how the will integrate into existing processes or how they will be launched, and which organizations will be impacted if the project creates new processes or organizations.

In physics, the term simplicial manifold commonly refers to one of several loosely defined objects, commonly appearing in the study of Regge calculus. These objects combine attributes of a simplex with those of a manifold. There is no standard usage of this term in mathematics, and so the concept can refer to a triangulation in topology, or a piecewise linear manifold, or one of several different functors from either the category of sets or the category of simplicial sets to the category of manifolds.

How did cotton relate to slavery?

Growing more cotton meant an increased demand for slaves. Slaves in the Upper South became incredibly more valuable as commodities because of this demand for them in the Deep South. They were sold off in droves. This created a Second Middle Passage, the second largest forced migration in America's history.

Luddite

The Luddites were a secret oath-based organization[1] of English textile workers in the 19th century, a radical faction which destroyed textile machinery as a form of protest. The group are believed to have taken their name from Ned Ludd, a weaver from Anstey, near Leicester. They protested against manufacturers who used machines in what they called "a fraudulent and deceitful manner" to get around standard labor practices.[2] Luddites feared that the time spent learning the skills of their craft would go to waste, as machines would replace their role in the industry.[3] Many Luddites were owners of workshops that had closed because factories could sell the same products for less. But when workshop owners set out to find a job at a factory, it was very hard to find one because producing things in factories required fewer workers than producing those same things in a workshop. This left many people unemployed and angry.[4] Over time, the term has come to mean one opposed to industrialization, automation, computerization, or new technologies in general.[5] The Luddite movement began in Nottingham in England and culminated in a region-wide rebellion that lasted from 1811 to 1816.[6] Mill and factory owners took to shooting protesters and eventually the movement was suppressed with legal and military force.

In the theory of the strong interaction of the standard model, we describe the interactions between quarks and gluons. But In the low-energy regime of QCD, the degrees of freedom are no longer quarks and gluons, but rather hadrons. This is a result of confinement. If one could "solve" the QCD partition function (such that the degrees of freedom in the Lagrangian are replaced by hadrons), then one could extract information about low-energy physics. To date this has not been accomplished. Because QCD becomes non-perturbative at low energy, it is impossible to use perturbative methods to extract information from the partition function of QCD. Lattice QCD is an alternative method that has proved successful in extracting non-perturbative information.

Fabricating van der Waals bilayer heterostructures (BL-HS) by stacking the same or different two-dimensional layers, offers a unique physical system with rich electronic and optical properties. Twist-angle between component layers has emerged as a remarkable parameter that can control the period of lateral confinement, and nature of the exciton (Coulomb bound electron–hole pair) in reciprocal space thus creating exotic physical states including moiré excitons (MXs).
